Issue #166: February 15, 2006
- Unfortunately, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Woman
in White doesn’t quite have the legs that his The Phantom of the
Opera does. The New York production closes on February 19 after only
four months… and the London production will be closing on February 25
after just 19 months.
- Film star Ralph Fiennes (The Constant Gardener,
The English Patient) returns to Broadway on May 4 at the Booth Theatre
where he will star in a revival of Brian Friel’s Faith Healer. Fiennes was last on Broadway in 1995 when he won the Tony Award for his
performance in Hamlet.
- Former Second City and Saturday
Night Live alum Martin Short is taking his life story to the
stage this summer. This “cheeky” autobiographical musical, Martin
Short: Fame Becomes Me, is scheduled for an August 10 opening;
however, a theatre has not yet been announced.
- Jesse L. Martin, (currently in TV’s Law
and Order) who starred in the Broadway and film version of Rent, has been signed to play Marvin Gaye in a new film called Sexual
Healing. With all the latest stage productions being based on music
icons, who knows how long it will be before we see the Broadway version of Gaye’s life.
- Phylicia Rashad returns to Broadway when she stars
in The House of Bernarda Alba at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theatre
opening March 6.
- Broadway legend Chita Rivera will be bringing down
the curtain on her stage autobiography Chita Rivera: A Dancer’s Life on
February 19 after a disappointing run playing only 72 performances. But
not much keeps the 70-something dancer down… she will be taking her show
on the road with the first stop January 2, 2007, at the Miami Performing Arts Center.
- You can catch Dame Diana Rigg in the premiere of Joanna
Murray-Smith's play Honour which opened on February 14 at the
Wyndham Theatre.
- There is talk that David Hare's brilliant
three-character play Skylight may be revived later this year.
