Issue #14: January 6, 1999

Broadway

  • The Off Broadway Promenade Theater will host a limited run of James Naughton’s one-man musical (yet to be named), which will be presented by Mike Nichols. Naughton was most recently seen on Broadway as Billy Flynn in the hit revival of Chicago.
  • The Lincoln Center Theater will produce British playwright David Hare’s Via Dolorosa scheduled to open in March at the Booth Theater. Hare stars in this solo show that opened in September at the Royal Court Theatre in London to rave reviews.
  • Sandra Bernhard’s one-woman show I’m Still Here…Damn It! will close at the Booth Theater on February 27 to make way for the above mentioned Via Dolorosa.

Broadway On The Road

  • The Aasif Mandvi play Sakina’s Restaurant, currently at the American Place Theater in New York, will hit the road for a mini tour. First stop will be Toronto’s Winchester St. Theatre from Jan 25 to Feb. 14 then on to Chicago and San Francisco. People close to the production believe it will be a success in any city with a large Indian population.

London's West End

  • Following the huge success of David Holliwell’s 1960s farce Little Malcolm and His Struggle Against the Eunuchs starring Ewan McGregor, which closed Dec. 23 at the Hampstead Theatre in North London, the show will transfer to the West End’s Comedy Theatre. Performances begin January 20 for a limited eight-week run.

Broadway Around the World

  • The Sydney Festival is in full swing downunder and those David Hare fans can catch the festival’s production of The Judas Kiss at the Belvoir St. Theatre in the very trendy Surrey Hills neighbourhood from Jan. 6 to 14.
  • The revival of Kander & Ebb’s knockout musical Chicago will make its way to Oz in February. Due to open at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney, the limited engagement begins on the 25long legs and buff bods anyone!!!

Bits & Pieces

  • You know her as the quirky lawyer Ally McBeal, but Calista Flockhart is no stranger to the Broadway stage. After completing the theatre program at Rutgers University, Ms. Flockhart did the regional theatre circuit, made limited appearances on soaps and taught aerobics before being cast opposite theatre legend Julie Harris in the 1994 Broadway revival of The Glass Menagerie. Calista continued with limited film appearances, including Robert Redford’s Quiz Show and the 1996 comedy hit Birdcage with Robin Williams and another Broadway veteran Nathan Lane. She returned to the Broadway stage in 1997 where she received a Tony nomination for her role in Three Sisters. Let’s hope Ms. Flockhart finds time in her busy television schedule to return to her first love—the theatre—if only for a limited engagement.
